Who's calling this Saturday?

The line-up for the London Calling Festival on Saturday.

Long blondes
The Long Blondes are the part of the next chapter of Sheffield’s idiosyncratic musical heritage: the suburban disco fantasies of the Human League, the opulent ridiculousness of ABC, the seedy glamour of Pulp. You can listen to some songs on myspace, or at the “I was there” blog.

The Kooks
Energetic Brighton New Pop Foursome with an Honest, Appealing Musical Style.
You can listen to some songs on their website, myspace, or download some songs at my yellow country teeth or Queijo Derretido. Or just buy the album

Mystery Jets
A 5-piece band out of London Their sound is somewhere between Franz Ferdinand, Blur, Monochrome Set and Super Furry Animals. They already attracted the attention of the indie press with their unconventional line-up (the lead singers dad plays guitar) Listen to some songs on myspace, or download some songs at the “keep it coming” Blog, the “Green Pea-ness” blog or “the prettiest Pony” Blog or buy the album

Good Shoes
Art Pop from London this is raw Indie music at it’s best. Listen to some songs on myspace or download “never meant to hurt you” from the artrocker website.

The Cinematics
Glasgow four piece beat combo with influences ranging from The Cure, Television, Magazine, Wire, The Smashing Pumpkins to Talking Heads, The Smiths and Jeff Buckley. The band have a diverse taste in music which in turn makes their sound interesting, but easily accessible. Listen to some tunes on Myspace, download “the chase” from the SXSW showcase

Howling Bells
Shoegazers from Australia sounds like Yeah Yeah Yeahs or Duke Spirit. You can listen to a couple of songs at myspace or download at “fluxblog”, “Green Pea-ness” or “Motel de Moka” or buy the single

Larrikin Love
From London Indie Rock with Ska influences the new fun guys on the block. Listen at myspace or download a song at “P3DRO”

The Noisettes
Most looking forward to this band from London. Noisettes are fronted by the supremely talented and beautiful Shingai Shoniwa, a vocalist and instrumentalist who sings like Billie Holiday on PCP while patrolling the stage like an Amazonian Warrior with an eye for fashion. Shingai howls and soothes, gives you goose bumps and shoots soul into your main arteries. Listen at myspace, download some songs at “radio free internet” or buy the single.

Humanzi
From Dublin Indie Rock in Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Kasabian style. Listen and download some songs at myspace, or buy them

Sunshine Underground
My other favorite for the festival. From Leeds they play dance punk pop in the style of the Rapture. Their single “Commercial Breakdown” is on of the best songs of 2006. listen on Myspace or read more and download a song at “Bigstereo”

Punk Poppers already played the Glastonbury Festival en scored a top ten hit ‘Hounds Of Love’ you can get the song at the M3 Blog. Or download the Futureheads live in Leeds from the Rbally Blog. Visit them at myspace to hear some more songs.

Young Knives
Started as a Ned’s atomic Dustbin cover band now playing proper Post Punk and I read blogs calling them the new Futureheads. Listen to their new single at the I guess I’m floating blog I especially love the song Elaine. Here’s another song you can download from the SxSW showcase called Weekend and Bleak days.
Check them out at Myspace.

The Tiny Dancers
According to Popmatters Tiny Dancers' sound is a glistening mix-up of country, Sheffield blues, Brian Jones-era Stones, and Beatlesque rock and roll. There's a little bit of Neil Young's creaking sadness coursing through their melodies, and a touch of Flaming Lips silliness when they play live. Listen to some songs on Myspace.

Right round, round round

Pete Burns was frontman of The Mystery Girls who managed to play their first and final gig on the same night. The band also included Pete Wylie, Julian Cope, and Phil Hurst. They played a Superb gig supporting Sham 69 in November 1977. The group folded immediately after, with the members going their separate ways. Burns and Wylie form “Nightmare in wax” and released a 12" single, "Black Leather," Halfway through the song it breaks into KC and the Sunshine bands “That’s the way, I like it” Subsequently they score their first hit with a cover of the same song but that was after the band evolved into “Dead or Alive” They later achieved stardom with the hit “You spin me round (like a record)” the song was the first number 1 hit for the production team Stock Aitken and Waterman. and twenty years later it still is a dance-floor favourite. The song was released once again last month after Pete Burns his Big Brother appearance, it re-entered the UK charts at #5. Since last week Pete is being treated in a mental hospital for depression. His manager has confirmed that he’s suffering from exhaustion and sleep deprivation

Queen of Aerobics

English singer Debbie Jenner -better known as Doris D.- was the face to ‘Funky Town’ by studio band Lipps Inc. In 1980 she formed a dance group called The Maria More Dancers, which performed on a TV programme, "Top Pop" in the Netherlands. After changing their name to Doris D & the Pins they had a couple of disco hits in the Netherlands, shine up was the biggest hit. After some arguments about royalties with the four group members Doris formed a new band called Pins. The background singers start their own band called Risque and scored a hit with the song “the girls are back in town.” Debbie Jenner is still wel known for introducing Aerobics in the Netherlands.

What is funk?

Formed in 1976, Rare Gems Odyssey was a disco/funk/soul combo that recorded two little-known LPs in the late '70s. its self-titled debut album came out on the in 1977; when the LP failed to sell, they were dropped by their record label. In 1978 they changed their name to Rare Gems and recorded their second album “million dollar disco” for the small California Gold Label. That LP was also plagued by a lack of attention, and in 1980, Rare Gems broke up. 99 percent of the world's disco lovers probably never heard of Rare Gems Odyssey, still they made a brilliant song called “what is funk” it’s a six minute classic that sounds like Parliament or Funkadelic

Remember the Alamo

The single Liza Jane by Davie Jones & the King Bees wich came out in 1964 sounds very much like a rough sub-stones style that many groups had in these days. It's not very original Nonetheless, Davie Jones & the King Bees attracted the interest but the single didn't go anywhere. the most important thing about the singer is that he left the band after their first single and to avoid confusion with the actor Davy Jones he changed his name after the Alamo hero Jim Bowie in David Bowie.

Take me out to see Junkyard

The junk yard Band were a group of kids ages 8 to 11 living in a government housing project in Washington, D.C., were inspired to play music upon continually seeing performances of go-go bands in their neighborhood. Not having any money to buy instruments they used crates, cans ,buckets and old pots and pans from nearby alleys and junkyards to play on. After just a few performances they group was dubbed the name, "Junkyard Band." In the late 1980's, with the help of their manager Mo Shorter, Junkyard got an album deal with Def-Jam Records where they cut a couple of singles one of them was Tiddy Balls. According to their website the band still plays live every week in Temple hills and Washington.

The pope of fetish music

Carlos Peron is co-founder of the cult group YELLO. Carlos left the band in 1984 after the release of YELLO's third album, "You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess", He wanted to pursue a number of adventurous solo projects. Some musiccritics say that YELLO lost their edge once he departed. In 1992 he developed the music for the fetish performance"Terminatrix". The huge success motivated him to create a fetish mix called "La Salle Blanche". His label Strange Ways Records brought this erotic soundtrack immediately to themarket. It sold in the thousands worldwide and became a cult item. From then on CARLOS was hailed as the "pope of fetish music".

The headless horseman

Joe Satriani is a recognized virtuoso of the rock guitar. Satriani was inspired to play guitar at age 14 after hearing that Jimi Hendrix had died. It's not unusual!

Here’s a kick-ass big band swinger from the Welsh crooner in his best shape. The hip-swinging big-band production style featured on this tune drives me wild. It just builds and builds and builds with Tom Jones out in front. The song was Written by the Gordon Mills, who already wrote "It's not unusual" especially for Jones in 1965 and scored a massive worldwide hit.
